I read The Devil of Nanking last year or the year before and it blew me away. Definitely one of the better ones! AJ is a wonderful character--compassionate, vulnerable, yet strong. After a few bad books I was slightly unsure what Mo Hayder would bring to the table. The only qualm is that the sub-plot involving Flea and her secret which Jack knows of doesn't get enough attention, IMO, and ends up feeling more like a distraction than an important focus of the book.

Flea Marley, the tortured dive sergeant is a particular favourite of mine but Jack is as brooding and sexy as ever in this. You know you're going to be frightened reading this book. Don't get me wrong, Mo Hayder has fine writing chops and a deviously clever mind and I wouldn't hesitate recommending her to anyone looking for a good thriller.

Poppet could be bayder as a stand alone, but do yourself a favour - start from the beginning of the series - you'll be hooked. This being Hayder, of course that peace comes at a cost. There's a delicious blend of horror and crime here, from the first creepy sighting of the cover how is it possible for a kitsch china cat to look so scary?

Initally, the weird cover sparked my interest but Hayder's engrossing writing kept me interested. I was delighted to get it early on the Kindle and I read it fast.

But two things happened to put me off this book. Jack, meanwhile, is still preoccupied by Misty Kitson, the supermodel who disappeared after wandering out of a rehab clinic just over a year ago.

Naturally - it's Mo Hayder after all - there is more than meets the eye, and as one character puts it, "all is not always as it seems". AJ contacts detective Jack Caffrey, who begins to look into Isaac and the episodes at the mental ward.

There are some reminders about the bayder novels, but for those who have forgotten about Misty's death, these reminders may not be introduced early enough even I started to wish that I had re-read the series again from start to finish - and I will, some day, as that is my favorite way to experience a haydr. The story drags along the pages, and DI Jack Caffery still has not solved some past-issues with Sergeant 'Flea' Marley what's her first name again?

Poppet is not what i would call fast paced but it has loads of twists and it does grip you from the beginning,cant wait to read book number seven Wolf when it is published. Grove Press April 8, Language: The book oozes sinisterness from the first page. All patients hadyer very nervous and keep talking about a non-human entity which haunts them. Hayder instantly pulls the reader in and does not let go.

He's an enigma - flawed, fearless, full of secrets but a dedicated cop - who plays by his own rules. The last pages are really fast paced and in one place I found myself gasping out loud to something that was written. Some of them maim themselves and poppe there is death.

I didn't find it particularly frightening more there was a real sense of unease that kept building and building and kept the pages turning and turning. Suddenly, popet hysteria at the hospital doesn't seem to be simple any more and they are wondering if it is supernatural or simply a person's deed. Strange things are going on at a local mental hospital. I have heard really good things about "Poppet" and of all this series, this book intrigues me the most. She lives in England.
